Support to establish a sustainable food enterprise

Since 2017, SOS-UK has worked with almost 80 student and staff groups to help them establish sustainable food social enterprises on campus. These have included zero waste shops/stalls, vegbox schemes, growing to sell and food preserving enterprises, pay as you feel cafes, beekeeping and many more.

Up to December 2020, 65 student-led enterprises had traded and together they had:

  • Sold over £147,000 worth of sustainable food
  • Diverted almost 9 tonnes of food from landfill
  • Created, expanded or improved 58 food growing sites
  • Enabled 3000 young people to improve their employability skills
  • Been supported by people volunteering over 36,000 hours of their time
     

PRE-REQUISITE OF THE PROGRAMME

You will need to have an approved location to base your enterprise with regard to storage and selling requirements.


INCLUDED IN THE COSTS

  • Half a day on-campus training session covering (please note this half day training is also available as a standalone in our Learning Academy):
    • Planning
    • Producers/suppliers
    • Team roles
    • Making a profit
    • Practical logistics & procedures
    • Marketing
    • Legalities/permissions/legal structure
    • Measuring your impact
  • Mentoring via monthly 30min video calls to help with challenges including, but not limited to:
    • Student leadership and engagement
    • Staying motivated & focused
    • Planning ahead
    • Volunteer succession planning
    • Basic bookkeeping
    • General trouble shooting
  • On-campus follow up visit&
  • Access to resources including: handover template, volunteer role profile template, ethical sourcing information, marketing resources, etc
  • Two tickets to the annual Student Eats conference
  • Automatic membership of our Student Eats Enterprise Network


NOT INCLUDED IN THE COSTS

  • Finances for initial set up of the enterprise. Start-up costs required will depend on the type of enterprise but may include equipment, branding/marketing, initial stock, Level 2 Food Hygiene training
  • Any local council or legal fees associated with the set-up of your enterprise
  • Any tickets or invitations to Student Eats events offered to you through this programme will not include travel or accommodation costs
  • Venue/room costs for training session on campus
