Student Switch Off is our multi award-winning student sustainability programme - it provides a structure for engagement to improve student experience and carbon literacy by focusing on quantifiable energy, waste and water reduction within student accommodation.

Programme fees and included content for 2020-21 are:

We are very happy to tailor our activities based on the size and requirements of each campus/student accommodation provider, with bespoke support developed based on the following categories:

SUPPORT AND PLANNING

  • Detailed planning meeting to fully integrate Student Switch Off into your campus culture, decide key dates and local logistics; 
  • On-going feedback over the course of academic year; 
  • Analysis of sustainability data (typically energy data) to maintain campaign leaderboard;
  • End of year impact report.

 

BEGINNING OF TERM CAPACITY BUILDING

  • Warden/residential assistant Student Switch Off training to induct and engage key student staff members to support wider student population in the programme; 

  • Attendance at arrival weekend/halls induction event to engage students as they enter halls or attendance at freshers’ fayre to raise awareness and sign-up students;
  • Student Switch Off branded campaign resources for freshers’ fayre and arrival activities. 

[NB in the event of delayed student return on campus we will deliver online sustainable students training from our Learning Academy at no cost in addition to adapting other aspects of our delivery]

 

STUDENT TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT 

  • Sustainability training for students living in halls;
  • Student Switch Off branded fairtrade T-shirt and resources to enable students to promote campaign;
  • Ongoing student support to continue their engagement with the programme and develop their sustainability leadership experience

 

COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITY 

  • Regular communication with students opted in to the programme via email and social media; 
  • Regular social media competitions over the year including week long targeted campaigns;
  • Two online climate change quizzes;
  • Template communication materials such as posters and social media graphics;
  • Sourcing of prizes for a number of social media competitions. 

 

FACE-TO-FACE ACTIVITY 

  • Halls of residence/students’ union/dining hall visits to engage students in the campaign
  • Support the organisation of the end-of-year celebratory event for the winning hall

 

WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU

  • Provision of energy data at least twice a year (usually end of winter and spring terms). If you want to include recycling and water data in your leaderboard, you will also need to provide this
  • Access to halls for face-to-face visits
  • Any cost incurred for the provision of a stand at freshers’ fayre
  • Access to room(s) for training
  • Sending approximately 4-5 emails on our behalf to all students living in halls at strategic times of the year
  • Printing and distribution of posters in halls of residence;
  • End-of-year overall prize for the winning hall
