Students' Unions

In 2016-17 NUS funded four students' unions to run events to engage their students with woods and trees. Each union applied for grants of up to £500 with the aim of collecting stories from students, with the stories being used to shape the content of the Charter for Trees, Woods and People.

Edinburgh University Students' Association

During their new “SustainEd” Edinburgh Green Festival from the 16th-18th February 2017, the student association communally planted three large specimen trees which was attended by their local councillor and Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust. The day included media coverage and they also gave out around 420 seedlings, whips and pot plants to attendees, all the time promoting the health benefits, environmental importance, carbon capturing and cultural value of trees and woodland.
Stories were collected via a video and they estimated to have engaged around 1,000 members of the public.

The Students' Union - Staffordshire University

Held a stall within the union getting students to tell them about their experiences of trees, their memories, feelings and ambitions for the tree-scape in the area and in their home community. During their event, they collected 155 tree stories.
The union is carrying on their work by working with first year students to plant trees around their halls of residences.

Bangor University Students Union

Planted fruit trees across the Bangor University campus with the aim being for students and the community to have access to free picking of fruit. Over 100 trees of different varieties were planted. They had a dedicated team of students and staff in place to deliver and support the project as well as the full backing of the property and campus services department in Bangor. The event allowed for volunteering opportunities and spin off workshops for students. They collected 100 tree stories during their Go Green Week, which ran alongside their tree planting event.

Coleg Cambria

Current Forestry students extend their current work of replanting and renewing an area of conifer with 4500 new trees to inform, educate and engage students from many other courses across the college. They created a video promoting the planting of 4500 tree project, inviting non forestry students to join in to plant a tree. They launched their video at their Student Voice Parliament, collecting between 200-300 stories.
