About the Global Goals Teach In

In February 2018 we held our first ever “SDG Teach In” to encourage the use of the SDGs in exploring how different disciplines and subject areas relate to sustainability and social justice. The SDG Teach In calls for the Sustainable Development Goals to be used as a catalyst for further embedding sustainability across the curriculum and drive action around curriculum reform.

Now in its fourth year, the campaign calls upon educators to pledge to include the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within their teaching, learning, and assessment on their course(s) over the course of 2 weeks in February and March.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 'global goals' which set out targets to end poverty, protect the planet, and achieve prosperity for all by 2030. Alongside being a standalone goal, education is also vital for attaining all the other goals. We know that 60% of students, regardless of discipline, want to learn more about sustainability, as demonstrated by six years of NUS-led research.

The Global Goals Teach In gives educators and students the opportunity to start a conversation about embedding sustainability throughout learning.

The Teach In aims to:

  • Raise awareness of the importance of sustainable development
  • Catalyse curriculum reform and test new ideas
  • Embed sustainability and social responsibility across all learning
  • Link teaching, learning, and assessment to local and global concerns
  • Prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and attributes to tackle the world's greatest challenges

To take part, educators pledge to include the SDGs in their teaching, learning, and assessment in one or more of their courses during the Teach In. This happens through case studies, debate, discussion, group work, or simulations relating to topics included within the SDGs. Ideally, students learn about the SDGs and their relevance to the course.

In 2021 our SDG Teach In will take place from the 22nd February - 5th March 2021 and it's a great opportunity to either start the conversation around the Global Goals or to further on the work achieved through last year's Teach In. See the current reach and impact of our 2021 campaign here

This campaign is part of a fortnight of climate-related activities: Fairtrade Fortnight is 22 February - 7 March 2021 and the People & Planet Go Green Week takes place 22 February - 26 February. We would encourage educators and students to work together to focus the entire fortnight on activism and education around the climate crisis, environment, and social justice.

Our vision is to see all students leaving formal education with the knowledge, skills, and attributes to create a more just and sustainable future.
