What are the SDGs?
The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 'global goals' which set out targets to end poverty, protect the planet, and achieve prosperity for all by 2030. The goals were adopted by all the world’s governments at the UN in 2015 and will guide global development.

Are the SDGs relevant to my subject?
Yes! The SDGs think holistically about sustainability, including topics like gender equality, poverty, health and wellbeing, climate action, clean energy, and peace, justice, and strong institutions. This breadth means that all disciplines can identify meaningful links.

For inspiration, you might want to see our A to Z guide of sustainability good practice in disciplines ranging from Art to Zoo Management.

Does this include critiques or challenges the goals?
Yes, by all means. We believe the SDGs offer a great framework for engaging with sustainability, but they are not beyond criticism:

Does participation in the Teach In imply uncritical support of the SDGs?

No, the initiative is about critically engaging with the SDGs through education.

I love this! How can I get more involved?
Great! There are lots of ways that you can build on this within your own course, at your college or university, and with coursemates and friends:

  1. Ask your teacher, educator or lecturer to take part in the Global Goals Teach In by pledging their support. You may find this template email helpful to approach them. Encourage your lecturers to try out new ideas and cover the SDGs through case studies, open discussion, debate, group work, field work, creative projects, role-play simulations or in partnership with local organisations or members of the community – whichever makes you most excited! You might become the catalyst that drives curriculum reform, introducing not only new topics but also new methods of teaching.
  2. Get others involved: Share your involvement and experiences on social media with #SDGTeachIn.
  3. Sign-up to For Good: A free web platform run by SOS-UK which matches students to organisations (NGOs, charities, and businesses) to complete shared research on social, environmental, or economic sustainability.
  4. Stay in touch with SOS-UK – sign-up to our newsletter.
  5. Also engage in the UCU and NEU Climate-Themed Learning Week which also coincides with People & Planet's annual Go Green Week taking place the week prior to the SDG Teach In.
